Gateway Expressway Lanes Project Nears Completion With New Toll Roads

Previous Article about the project.

After years of construction and delays, the highly anticipated Gateway Expressway project in St. Petersburg is finally nearing completion. This Friday, April 26th, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will open the new toll roads and express lanes to drivers, marking a major milestone for the $598 million project.1236 The Gateway Expressway consists of two key components aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity in Pinellas County:

  1. State Road 690: A new four-lane, elevated toll road running above 118th Avenue North, connecting Interstate 275 (I-275) to U.S. Highway 19 (US 19).5
  2. State Road 686A: A raised, four-lane toll road built in the median of State Road 686 (Roosevelt Boulevard), extending from SR 690 north to the Bayside Bridge and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.

Both toll roads will utilize electronic toll gantries for SunPass transponders or pay-by-plate billing. In addition to the new toll roads, the project includes the long-awaited express lanes on I-275 from south of Gandy Boulevard to 4th Street North. These express lanes will connect with the new tolled lanes on the Howard Frankland Bridge, providing a seamless express lane system between Tampa and St. Petersburg.124

The Gateway Expressway aims to solve long-standing transportation challenges in Pinellas County, which has lacked major limited-access thoroughfares apart from I-275. By providing new east-west connections and express lane options, the project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve commute times for residents and visitors alike.5

“This project, when combined with the Howard Frankland Bridge, Gateway and Westshore Interchange projects, will continue the development of an express lane system between downtown Tampa, downtown St. Pete, Tampa International Airport and the Gateway and Westshore business districts,” said David Gwynn, FDOT District Seven Secretary.4

While the new toll roads and express lanes open this Friday, some lane closures and construction activities will continue through the summer as FDOT works on the project’s final details.6 Pinellas County residents and commuters have eagerly awaited the Gateway Expressway’s completion, hoping it will provide much-needed relief from the area’s notorious traffic congestion. With the opening of the new toll roads and express lanes, that relief may finally be in sight.
