Central Avenue will close for Halloween

Car-Free St. Pete, St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, and both The Edge and Grand Central District, in partnership with the City of St. Pete, are closing nearly two miles of Central Avenue to traffic on Halloween, Sunday, October 31, for a massive open streets event.

Sunday the EDGE District will host its popular Sip & Stroll festivities. Up and down Central Avenue, between about 9th Street and 31st Street, local businesses are encouraged to activate their sidewalks. Families can get out and enjoy some trick or treating fun in the sunshine. Scooter demos, electric bus displays, roller skating, a mini parade and more are also in the works for the event.

Halloween on Central will close 22 blocks of Central Avenue

This event is the result of the top community desires communicated in the St. Pete 2050 Visioning Process.

“This event, called ‘Halloween on Central’, will showcase our vision for what a car-free Central Avenue could look like for locals, businesses and visitors to enjoy,” wrote the event organizers in a press release. Attendees can stroll & roll along nearly 2 miles of the city’s largest open spaces and experience the heart of St. Pete from a unique perspective that will allow them to rediscover their favorite local businesses and interact with the community in fun, healthy ways.

This could be the catalyst for more large-scale open streets events here in St. Pete. With the city working to bolster public transit options, and more folks moving to the region without personal vehicles, this could pose a great opportunity to rethink Central Avenue.
